A Catholic priest was charged with binding a 17-year-old in an Otsego church basement in 2013, despite a local investigation at the time that pressed no charges.
Plainwell City Council members plan to appoint one of two top applicants at a special meeting tonight, Thursday, Aug. 22, at 6:30 p.m. at city hall. They met yesterday, Wednesday, Aug. 21, to narrow a field of nine applicants after the Union Enterprise went to press.
Though the late Mayor Rick Brooks will be missed, the Plainwell City Council needs to fill the vacancy. Council members voted Monday, Aug. 12, to accept applications from those willing to serve on council, planning to appoint one to serve out the remainder of Brooks’ term, through November 2022.

LEIGHTON TWP.—Dive teams have located the body of a 58-year-old Caledonia man who appears to have drowned in Green Lake, the area where he lived. The Allegan County Sheriff’s Office said the drowning was reported to 911 at 2:05 p.m. on Saturday, July 20, though details were incomplete as to where he had last been seen.
As the Superfund cleanup marches down the Kalamazoo River removing dam impoundment areas filled with PCB-contaminated sediment, the City of Allegan agreed at the July 8 council meeting to move forward with community meetings that educate the public on the future of the Allegan City Dam.
